The most common question I receive with my career choice of medical illustration is, what is medical illustration? My explanation is usually a simple distillation of the phrase...medical, okay so it is scientific and involving health, and illustration, better put simply as art. Breaking down the formula for the title of a medical illustrator is similar to revealing the illusion behind a magic trick. As the viewer, you know the magic trick couldn’t possibly be reality, because magic and reality don’t coincide. Magic tricks, like medical illustration are a juxtaposition of two worlds, which shouldn’t fit but do. Medical illustration is the perfect balance of the visual formula for science and art. The need for a medical illustrator was once thought to be purely for documentation purposes. However, modern developments within photography have allowed for medical illustrators to go above and beyond our original purpose within the health industry. In the medical system, from the moment future doctors enter med school, they are learning from images we have created. Because medical illustrators have had had the same science foundation that the medical students have had. From the very basic to the extreme complexities of medicine, medical illustrators illustrate anatomy in its myriad states, from normal to the diseased, to help educate people everywhere.

The Turn

Magic tricks are progressive acts, which the audience follows from start to finish. The pledge (beginning, you view something ordinary), the turn (takes the ordinary something and makes it do something extraordinary), and the prestige (the big finale). Medical illustrators are the storytellers in the health industry. It is our job to make sure our audience clearly understands what is involved when you are finished looking at an image, looking at a sculpture, watching a video, or pulling a kidney out of a hat, kidding. It could be a brochure to help aunt Bess understand why her lungs have developed cancer, or little Lee who is worried his arm will be cut when its time for his cast to be removed. Either way, we need to know how to tell a story for every single person’s needs no matter the education level. In order to convince the audience the magic is real the magician has to create a visual story they can captivate the audience with. The professional medical illustrator is an individual whose master degree qualifies them to tell a visual story without words. We are trained to understand the systems and organization of the human body in ways only an artist can imagine. We understand the detail and dedication it took to be in the medical industry, and yet we also understand the need to simplify details in order to clarify a point, all through the stroke of a pencil or click of a mouse our audiences understand the story. As a student of life drawing, I could see my visual construction start to change; it altered the way I assembled reality in my mind. I started to draw from the outside of an object in, or draw fully realized objects without using a single line. My view has once again evolved as I’ve learned how the human body is organized. A magician sees his reality differently, knowing the secrets behind the story. I know the muscles that define a person’s back as they bend over to pick up an orange off the floor, that magnesium is used to block nerve synapses, and the importance of the patent ductus arteriosus in a newborn child.

The Prestige

When you hire a magician for a show, you hire them based in their ability to create a convincing illusion that captivates the audience. This will never happen if the magician cannot do his work competently. The value of having a trained medical illustrator from one of the accredited programs is very similar to a skilled magician. We were trained in ways you may not appreciate. Viewing a surgery from the surgeon’s perspective, feeling the living breathing tissue from an animal on the operating table, and taking med school classes among the future doctors are all achievements I can rightfully claim as developments in making the perfect magic act.

There are about 1000 medical illustrators in the continental United States, and only four accredited graduate programs who train them. We are the few magicians able to mix science and art together, and it truly is magic.

I am submitting the following two pieces to the Association of Medical Illustrators conference in July, 2011. I am very excited to attend! Both pieces are being reworked at the moment.

And then we are also working on two other assignments, one being an animation, and the other being a surgical procedure which will be produced in ink. Here is my viewed OR surgery and the process so far for the 3 plates.

I remember quite a few years back watching some reruns on the television in our living room of Rolex. I didn’t know the riders, or the horses, or even much about Eventing – but I knew it included cross-country and therefore I deemed every eventer was indeed….crazy. If someone had told me in a few years time I’d be going cross-country…

I have been riding since I was seven-years-old, I started at an Eventing barn called Flora Lea, but had no idea they even were eventers! I was a kid and I wanted horses all the time. However, the pleas of wanting a pony never really did win my parents over. I wouldn’t say I really started to learn to ride however until my years at SCAD riding outside of school learning dressage at Rose Hill and then later on riding at a barn closer to school, Silverthorne Run Stables.

Jen Helgrin introduced me to Eventing. She took me to my first show, and even let me take along her pretty palomino mare. On the way to the show, we had spoken of a Youtube video that had shown Karen O’Connor almost falling off during an event on cross-country. Karen managed to bounce right back in the tack and continue on with the event. This filed back into my memory for safe keeping. I remember sitting in the start box not really sure what I was getting myself into… how does Sunshine know, I meanknow to jump up the bank? Sunshine taught me to never underestimate the first fence! On my first fence, first cross-country event ever, she balked and threw me for a loop! I hung on for dear life thinking if Karen could do it, so could I! Alas it wasn’t to be, I hung for two minutes trying to push back on and landed on my feet. But they let me finish the event anyway!

Needless to say that was my first introduction to cross-country, and I was hooked. After graduating from college I became a working student for a year at Bit O Woods farm in NJ. I learned a lot about Eventing and bought a new horse, Loper. No, I didn’t pick his name, but am superstitious enough not to change it. It took 20 horses to look at to find the right one, and I remember thinking I AM NOT GETTING A SMALL HORSE AGAIN! But when you sit on the right horse, they say you know it, and I did when I sat on him… "Shoot, I guess I’m getting another small horse."

Loper and I spent that year at Bit O Woods where he learned to be a horse again [the previous farm didn't have turnout and so he was used to being in a stall 24/7]. Through lessons with Sally Cousins, Megan Pappler, and Lauren Lutcavage we grew a lot. I introduced him to cross-country and turnout. My first event on Loper was at Fair Hill, all I can remember from the event was hanging on while I tried to steer my happy horse through cross-country and the biggest smile on my face when we finished.

While I was a working student I received notification that I had been accepted into the Graduate Program at the Medical College of GA for the Medical Illustration program, and was instantly excited. The school is located in Augusta, not 20 minutes from horse country…Aiken :) This meant I would be able to go to school for my passion, as well as bring my pony with me. Loper was shipped down to Marrinson Stables and I started school. We’ve been training at Marrinson with Jodi Hemry for eight months now and don’t want to be anywhere else! I’ve gotten opportunities to learn from phenomenal people like Nina Ligon, Sally Cousins, Amy Boyle, and of course Jodi Hemry. Loper and I are still new to Eventing, and we’re learning from the best of the best and making the greatest connections through the most amazing people.

On loan from Jodi, I worked for Nina at the Fork trials a few weeks ago, and while I get to see the advanced fences up close and work with amazing horses, I don’t know that I’d ever want to climb so high up the totem pole. I’m okay with being the little rider watching all these amazing professionals take on the big fences. I’d be happy to maybe go a Training three-day in the future. Loper may be a little guy [I often call him my little sports car] and we’re only jumping the little stuff – but he has the spitfire to run and jump high, and hopefully we can continue on together until the day I can retire him in my back yard. He will still run up to the gate as he’s getting older [for his favorite, a banana] and look forward to the day we will say remember those good ole cross-country days.

Since we don't actually have a summer break, here is what I spent the last few days doing. I finished an oil painting commission as well as had to get a new phone since my other one decided to quit.

But the best was going to a combined training event at Full Gallop Farm. Got to see lots of friends and took Loper into the BN combined event and did a novice dressage test.

I found out yesterday I received a 3rd place in the Alumni category in the Cyberwalk contest at SCAD's SAF of 2011. Here's the image I painted online. I hope they work on the display and organization of this really cool event online. There were only 5 colors of chalk and you can't blend them or make fine lines.

Grooming for Nina Ligon - Spring Break at the FORK

I had the pleasure of working and grooming for Nina Ligon, Laura Hitchcock, and Nina's mother Pan over this Spring Break - and the best part was it was at the Fork. I've never been to the Fork but for those of you familiar to it will vouche when I say it is one of the nicest properties I've seen in the eventing world. It was probably the best prepared event I've been to as a groom and eventer.

d across the aisle from her team and I was lucky to be able to see Kim's dressage round on Paddy when Nina would follow later on with Sparky's dressage round. I've never had the opportunity to see Ki

m and Paddy in dressage so I can really say WHAT A TREAT!Nina brought four horses running three in the Intermediate divisions and one [Fernhill Fearless] in the Advanced... and I'm probably the biggest fan of one of them [Jazz K

ing]. I have no idea what draws us to particular horses, but Jazz has such personality of any horse I've met - and I hope together they go really far.

I've had the pleasure of working for Nina a few times this season, and there really isn't anyone better to work for. She has five incredible horses and all three plus the five horses were willing teachers and answered all my questions. She is only 18 years old but I feel that she is someone I could learn a lot from. My trainer and friend, Jodi Hemry whom also is a part of Kim's team, is grateful for the training I would receive as a groom from the Ligon's so I could help her in the future if her working student was unavailable.

Probably the most unforgettable part is watching the water complex at the tent. This was where you could see the brush fence at the top of the hill leading down to the two corners. We all held our breath waiting for Nina to leave the start box on Sparky. The tables were huge, the trakehner had just been switched before her ride [due to footing], and almost every horse was dragging their hind legs over the table leading into the water or having trouble with the double corners.

BUT of course Nina and Sparky came around jumped a bit up at the brush and then brought it all together beautifully for the corners. I know we were all holding our breath over the corners and when cleared there was a resounding cheer from the crowd for the spectacular ride.

Pan and Nina are probably the best mother/daughter team I've come across in the horse world. Pan is right there with the grooms mucking stalls and wrapping legs in preparation for what is to come. I've never seen a more dedicated parent to their kid in the horse world.

Thanks to all of them for a wonderful Spring Break, and slight reprieve from Graduate School in Aiken/Augusta as Masters week in Golf took over the town. Now back to the Medical world.

Breast Surgery - Tumor Mass Excision

Here is a mass excision that I had the opportunity to view in the O.R. about a month ago or so. Painted in Photoshop CS5 with photo reference from 3DSK.

Ideas for the texture on the skin, aureola and other came from ideas of texture in water ripples, desert crack-age, and tree branches.

Here's the first assignment I was given at MCG! Woot, a skull (recess monkey skull) in carbon dust. Then we had to take the assignment later on in the quarter and colorize the skull 'turnerize' it, digitally within the Adobe products. From there we had to research the separate bones within the skull and give each piece a didactic color.

My mom is cleaning out our house right now but she has some friends helping her... here is their story.

Last weekend, my mom's friend and her mother went to Atlantic City to stay and gamble and have fun in a hotel for the weekend. While they were there, the mom hit the jackpot on one of the random slot machines. The jackpot was about 400$ and it came out completely in quarters.

The mother, refused to cash in the quarters because she knew if she did she would spend it before the weekend was up.

So... the mother and the daughter at the end of the evening went to the elevators to get to their room on the fourth floor. Here are the two women, in the elevator (one with a bucket overflowing of quarters) and they get into the elevator on the lobby level - just the two of them. The elevator climbs, and on the next floor two black gentlemen get onto the elevator and look at the mother with her bucket of quarters. Then one of the guys says, 'hit the floor' and suddenly there are quarters flying everywhere in a panic, the women shouting and scrambling to the floor sprawling out as fast as they can. The quarters are scattered everywhere and they are begging the guys to take whatever they want but not to hurt them, they'll do whatever they ask but please just take what they want and go.

Suddenly the two guys start to bust out laughing.

They explain, "I said hit the 'FOUR' not the floor!"

The women I'm sure were really embarrassed but they all had a really good chuckle and cleaned the woman's money back up and had a good laugh. They all got off on the same floor and parted ways smiling...........................

The next morning the two women go to check out and the hotel desk concierge informs them that they're room was already paid for. They didn't understand since they hadn't paid for the room yet, so the woman behind the desk smiled and handed them a note... it said...

Lightning Storm Dream

I had a dream last night that I was laying in a bed somewhere far away from home. I glanced down at my phone and saw that there was a lightning storm with green clouds. The clouds where the lightning was showing on the radar were flashing on the phone screen. I then looked over to the right and saw the most dangerous looking group of clouds I have ever seen. But somehow, wasn't worried.

I started to walk and realized an old friend from years ago, Maria was with me. We did not speak but arrived to a woman sitting upon a wall of sand which we climbed up on and stood in front of her. She held a deck of cards and her eyes were clouded over with fog. She looked to be Native American with colorful shawls and wrinkled tan skin.

They gave Maria some drug to help her with some destiny of hers... I can't remember much of this part. But I know it affected her in a way that she couldn't walk - so a Modern Native American man came along at the elder woman's beckoning and took Maria into a doorway that suddenly appeared.

I do not recall what the woman said to me.

I followed through the door and found a nice handiworked house with carved wood and navajo blankets about. Maria was laying in a bed recovering, and seeming to wake upon my entering. We both were escorted out eventing by the same man who carried her in, to return to our homes.

WOOT! Finally the start of a new montly challenge... I don't even care about the prizes (which are lovely dvd's you can win... maybe I do care) but I'm so excited to start doing some matte paintings again.

This months challenge from this site is Alice in Wonderland, and it comes with a composite sketch of what the director would want... loveeeeeeeeeee details!

Here are the turnout results of my design!!!

I think the greatest surprise of the decorations was the ice sculpture with the logo design embedded inside. The whole theme of the party was Breakfast, and each table had a labeled cereal name box above it. The spoons were the table assignments and how you found your seat. They had a huge dance party and a great photo booth.

I read a funny interview yesterday from a friend, Tran, and one of the questions was, "If you could punch and artist who would you punch?"

I think I would definitely punch Davinci, because then I feel like he wouldn't have written everything backwards. I'd knock that backwards, backwards.

I can tell you that it can be very frustrating when painting in oils if the animals don't look like their real life counter parts. But, and I say but, when you paint the eye it makes the animal truly come to life. This is why you should always wait until at least halfway through to paint the eye so that you don't feel completely finished.

The first is a commission portrait of a horse and the last is a sketch I've done previously but wanted in the patterning style.

On another note, I start a class at BCC tomorrow for helping to get into graduate school, only taking one night class and it's a science credit course. My interview for grad school is in a month!! EEP! But I REALLY want to go, so I hope I get in ::crosses fingers::

I have been on two airplanes, out of three, and each one has been uterly amazing. One from Newark to Germany, and Germany to Bankok (Thailand). The woman who was taking care of us was laying the alcohol way too strong in the drinks we ordered. The second flight was amazing because the Thailand air crew who's taking care of us seem almost desperate to make our every wish come true. I was asked about twelve times if I wanted more bread with my food. I even got my own picnic table to fold out over my seat, or bed, to eat. The worst though is they seem like they don't understand the word 'no thank you' or they're just unused to hearing it. Every time they would ask if I wanted more, and if I said no, it was like I was kicking a puppy.

When we boarded the plane from Germany the skies were really dark and stormy and I saw a bolt of lighting about 200 feet away from where we were climbing into the sky. After the whole air france thing that really settled my stomach, not.

On these airplanes I had my own little mini television and I could pick what movies to watch...finally a chance to catch up with all the ones I've missed. I watched... Slumbdog Millionaire, Confessions of a Shopaholic (heather would lovvvvvvve), Vanilla Sky, Watchmen (what the hell was this about?), and Coraline (a little messed up).

Currently I'm sitting in our hotel room, It's 430 am here, but I really crashed when we finally arrived.

It was a real reality check when we arrived at the hotel, the security guard has the road blocked off, and when we drove up they walk around the car with a strange rod to search under the car to look for bombs.

When we arrived there was someone waiting for us to check us in and they walked up with a tray of drinks, I laughed out loud I think. But when we finally got to the time share, I crashed to sleep around 6pm and just woke up :D

So the funniest thing is Thailand imitation American food. Their eggs, milk, hashbrowns, and bacon are all very odd. Especially the milk. It tastes as if its directly from a goat udder. Regardless, we got up early since we both are stuck on 12 hours earlier time, and afterwards I went to check out the spa and the gym. The spa (my moms favorite commodity) was like walking into an instant serenity when you walked through the door, I think I started to sleep walk the moment I entered. Mom quickly signed up for an Oriental foot massage, and while Asians stroking my feet seemed soooo appealing, I decided to hit the gym instead.

Now it's day two and I'm sore as HEck. I was planning on running everyday...that might change to every other day. Another thing, they don't even have any Thai food at this resort! LOL. It's all imitation food of other countries, and everything is in English, bizarre. Yesterday we spent most of the day sitting by the pool side, the pool is incredible! It doesn't even look like a pool. And there's three pools to choose from.

Today I think we're planning on the outlet shopping place around the corner, however, we have to take the shopping shuttle because a lot of the taxis here, 'tuk tuks' are run by the Thai Mafia, and can be dangerous. Sigh, lovely. You think they have Italian Thai's?

We went to a fabulous show for tourists, called Fantasea. But it incorporated all the Traditional Thai Culture into one. My favorite had to be Kabuki, or Shadow puppets. I also loved this dance over bamboo sticks.

AND I got to hold a baby tiger!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It was for money but totally worth it! I couldn't pass it up.

We took an island tour and it was incredible! Most of the country is third world so most of the country side was shacks or brand new buildings meant to lure in tourists. Most of the buildings didn't even have full roofs or walls. And everywhere you went there were stray dogs, but our tour guide said that is the Thai dog, that's just what they do. They wander around and if they have a home they go back to it at night. 5 of his dogs were strays he said.

We went to two peeks and did a look out view - incredible! And at one of the places a guy came running up to us with an Eagle on his arm, want to hold the eagle for a price??? Um no. lol. Eagle looked mean.

We went to an elephant trekking site but decided against riding the elephant. I recently found out that to train the Thailand elephant they tie them up between two trees for two years and don't let them move except for human comands. Once trained to keep them in line they use an elephant hook, which is illegal in the US.

So we didn't ride one to support that. But I did pay to feed them :D They actually eat whole pineapple!!! Like the hard skin and all! I couldn't believe it. And they hold out their trunks in a cup fashion like please give it to me. It was hilarious.

Much of their money from tourism comes from drunk tourists and ripping off the tourists. But all in all I think mom and I did pretty well.

We did get to go to a Buddhist temple and see how they worship. In all places the Thai people remove their shoes when going inside. They also consider it the ultimate insult to touch a persons head since it's considered the highest part of a soul or human. They do not like public displays of affection at all. But no matter where you go they are always smiling and even bowing. Sawat-dee-kaa!!

:D Now I'm in germany waiting for our third flight, we're temporarily in a hotel. Our second flight I slept the most of the way through, but it was SO bumpy that when I was sleeping I almost felt out of my chair. Which scared the crap out of me considering the recent air France disaster.

Maybe I'll tweak it over the summer, but it's had enough L-work for now.

This was for Electronic II illustration, Jon Foeresters Class.

So this Saturday is graduation. EEP. And since I have no job prospects at the moment, I was thinking grad school? And I'm def. considering a masters of science in medical illustration. I guess we'll see if I can't get any job prospects or internships by the fall, and if not then I'll head for the grad degree.
